Jean Maranda
PRIZE

Montreal, August 30, 1952
To mark the 50 years that have passed since the death of our father, our mother wanted to
ensure the sustainability of the award given in his name at the University of Montreal. She has
donated to the university in her will and she was still talking about it a week before her death.
Jean Maranda was the director of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Montreal from 1968 to 1971. Tragically deceased after only 3 years in office, he left his mark on the department as well as the scientific community in Quebec and around the world.
Twenty-five years after his death, in 1996, the Department paid tribute to him by creating the Jean-Maranda Prize, a prestigious distinction awarded to the best
baccalaureate graduate in fundamental or applied mathematics. With great affection for this
award, the Department has so far drawn on its own funds to finance it and has been
able to recognize 25 recipients over the years.
To those who have at heart to honor the memory of Jean Maranda, and now also that of
Jeanne Maranda, we invite you to contribute to support the Jean-Maranda Prize in order to
continue to keep his memory alive for a long time to come and to join in this cause so
important to Jeanne. Thank you!
